Proactive Reduction Of Suicide in Populations via Evidence-based Research (PROSPER) for Gatekeepers
May 7, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am MDT
Kent Corso, PsyD, BCBA-D
Gatekeepers are a critical resource for identifying youths and adults in-crisis within any community or organization. Since suicide is relatively infrequent, rusty skills may leave gatekeepers less prepared to act swiftly and effectively when they encounter someone who is in crisis. This session will help correct misunderstandings about suicide while providing attendees with the appropriate and standardized language for discussing suicide. Through demonstration, active learning exercises, didactics and discussion attendees will learn how to use direct language to identify potential children, adolescents and adults who are in crisis and help them access appropriate services.
- Identify the risk factors for suicide
- Explain the construct of suicide in easily understandable terms
- Apply what they’ve learned using direct communication and appropriate standardized language in a role play to identify if a person is in crisis
- Apply what they’ve learned to help a person (in a role play) access appropriate clinical services
